Ural Airlines Emergency Landing Due To Bird Strike!! - [A321 Flight U6178]



After 226 passengers and 7 crews reached V1 speed on the take-off roller, the left engine was stopped due to Bird Strike and was unable to produce full power. Immediately behind the right engine was also disabled due to the entry of the bird. The two-engine aircraft were no longer motorized. Landing gear assembled. When both engines were out of operation, RAT (Ram Air Turbine) was removed to power the blue hydraulic system. The aircraft could be controlled by the hydraulic power provided by RAT.

Aircraft without engines (CFM56) had reached a height of 750 feet. It was impossible to continue the flight. The captain made a quick and correct decision and chose to land on the trunk of the cornfield, about 5km from the runway end. The pilot's decision was correct, the corn planted in front of him was flat as a table top. The plane slid over the hull and stopped after a short distance. Immediately left and right slides (total of 6) were opened and emergency evacuation was performed. During the evacuation, only 10 people out of 233 were slightly injured.

When the aircraft stopped after landing, both engines were disconnected from the pylons. In spite of the heavy damage, there is no fire in the aircraft and it is the best chance to survive without loss of life. The land is flat, ditch-free, bumpy, and fresh / green corn is a major factor preventing fire. Due to the flat terrain, the wings of the aircraft did not break and the fuel in them was not released. Known Fire Triangle; It consists of flammable, oxygen and combustible. Unless this trio comes together at the same time, there is no fire. There was oxygen in this incident, but two elements were missing: Flammable (fuel in tanks) and Burner (spark).

Although the engines were disconnected from the pylon, the Fuel Shut-Off valves were closed by the pilots, and the fuel in the wings was prevented from leaking out of the broken engine feed pipes by the Engine Shut-Down procedure when the bird entered.

In addition to the pilot's decision on landing on the hull and the correct application, the presence of flat fields at the end of the runway, the corn being reached to the cultivated human height is still green, the wings have not been damaged to drain the fuel inside. I think they were very lucky, and in short, God did not write death.
